Given the eternal Afro/Latin bias of Local and Western ears, Asian music, particularly Philippine music seems to be the 'final frontier' of world music. Exceptional East/West fusionist SYALAM is the latest band to challenge this state of affairs. What started off as a side project band for most of its members in 2006, led them to a musical journey where everything was made possible through the help of some good friends in the industry, SYALAM was able to self produce and release their debut album "TAYO" under Mah Music Records in June 13, 2008.
TAYO is a Malay influenced album that showcases the band's pride and distinctive approach in creating their very own type of music. In this album, SYALAM provides a broad range of musicality, ranging from reggae to blues, folk dance to dub, and jazz to tribal ethnic. TAYO, which consists of 10 original tracks, summons the beauty and the struggle of modern Filipino culture, invokes their listeners to spread "the word" and be a part of a positive cultural, environmental and social movement/transformation.
